Choosing a Grad School for Healthcare Professionals: A 7-Step Checklist

If you’re a healthcare professional or nurse thinking about graduate school, you’ve probably heard this classic advice:“It doesn’t matter where you go to school; we all get the same degree.”

And listen, while I’m moderately skeptical of this sentiment for pre-licensure nursing programs, it’s a hard no from me when it comes to grad school. But probably not for the reasons you’d expect.

Graduate school isn’t just about snagging a degree—it’s about finding a program that aligns with your values, vision, and goals. Choosing the right school can shape how you grow as a leader, challenge the status quo, and make a lasting impact in healthcare.

Rankings and prestige might seem like the obvious criteria, but they often miss what really counts.

Why Grad School Rankings Are Overhyped (and What Actually Matters)

When people start the grad school search, academic rankings often dominate the conversation. They’re tempting—they feel concrete, they’re everywhere, and they’re easy to access. But for healthcare professionals who want to drive systemic change, rankings don’t tell the whole story.

Rankings usually reflect things like faculty research funding or exclusivity, which might look shiny on paper. But they don’t answer the real questions:

  • How does this program equip students to lead change in healthcare?

  • Does it center diverse perspectives and prioritize healthcare justice?

  • Will it actually help you create the future you envision for healthcare?

For change-makers like us, the question isn’t:

“How prestigious is this program?”

It’s:

“Does this program align with the future I want to create—and will it help me get there?”

7 Dimensions to Evaluate Healthcare Grad School Programs

Here’s the deal: finding the right program means looking beyond rankings. That’s why I put together this Graduate Program Fit Checklist to help you evaluate schools based on what actually matters.

1. Commitment to Systemic Change

  • Self Check-In: Does the program actively challenge the healthcare status quo?

  • What to Look For: Schools that prioritize initiatives like healthcare access, affordability, or partnerships with underserved communities. Programs with a mission to improve health equity? Chef’s kiss.

2. Diversity and Inclusion

  • Self Check-In: Do you want to learn in an environment with diverse perspectives and backgrounds?

  • What to Look For: Programs with diverse faculty, inclusive student demographics, and initiatives that actually walk the talk when it comes to representation.

3. Learning Environment and Community Values

  • Self Check-In: What kind of learning atmosphere helps you thrive—collaborative, competitive, or independent?

  • What to Look For: Student testimonials, mentorship opportunities, and cultures that emphasize teamwork and mutual support. Basically, the vibes have to match how you work and learn best.

4. Financial Accessibility

  • Self Check-In: How important is financial support in your decision-making process?

  • What to Look For: Scholarships, grants, or financial aid packages to help you avoid the whole 'student debt is forever' vibe.

5. Quality of Clinical and Experiential Learning Opportunities

  • Self Check-In: Are hands-on experiences and clinical placements a priority for you?

  • What to Look For: Strong clinical rotations, partnerships with healthcare organizations, and real-world training that doesn’t just check a box but actually prepares you to lead.

6. Faculty as Practitioners and Mentors

  • Self Check-In: Would learning from active practitioners or healthcare leaders enhance your experience?

  • What to Look For: Faculty bios highlighting real-world experience, mentorship, and involvement in healthcare leadership or policy. Translation: people who have been there, done that, and can guide you.

7. Long-Term Value Beyond the Degree

  • Self Check-In: How important are alumni networks or career services for your post-graduation success?

  • What to Look For: Programs with strong alumni networks, robust career services, and ongoing opportunities to stay connected and supported.
